FUNdamental

It’s no secret that I love kids. For a million and one reasons. But one of the biggest reasons is their love for fun. How they can make anything fun. How they find the fun in the world. How quickly they bounce back from a moment of sorrow, frustration, disappointment or discomfort and straight back into fun.

Whenever I spend time with the kids in my life, I leave with my cup full. Sure, they are cute, they don’t filter their love but more than that, they force me to play in the most delightful ways, tricking me into forgetting about all my ‘problems’ and bringing me back to connecting with myself.

As the warmer weather is emerging, the kids are out and about after a long winter and having the time of their lives. It was about this time two years ago, I was having a conversation with my friend Jared, who is also the one who inspired this little sketch. We were reminiscing about our childhoods on opposite sides of the world, him being American and me South African. He was about to go for a bike ride, and I confessed that I never had a bike as a youngster and therefore I don’t know if I can ride a bike. This is true…take a moment for the shock to dissipate. Okay, so we were talking about playing outside for hours, swimming, digging in the dirt, board games, ball games and water sports. Just endless amounts of fun growing up. We discovered that we had quite a few things in common, one being that we both enjoyed skateboarding when we were kids.

At the time I was thinking about getting a longboard, similar to a skateboard, but as the name implies, longer. We were saying how we don’t have enough fun as adults. I decided then and there that I would not wait a day longer and I went and bought myself a longboard. Two years later, I still suck at it, but I have so much fun taking my longboard out on a beautiful day. Throw in some friends and it’s fun all day long!

As grownups we have responsibilities, jobs and many other things that are not considered fun. But as with all important things, we must make time for it. It is fundamental that we keep fun a part of our lives, it keeps us connected, young at heart and in good health.

Be it longboarding, riding your bike, playing boardgames, card games, splashing in the water, take a page out of the kids’ playbook and make the time to have FUN – it’s FUNdamental!
