Ho Ho Ho and the Happiest of Holidays to everyone. (Alliteration is my jam!)
It’s coffee break blog time, so sit back, relax and sip that cup of something delicious, this one is a shorty.
Tis the season, and I find myself reflecting on all the kinds of Christmases I’ve had. Some in the summer and my first white Christmas as an adult, in Korea. As an expat with friends who come and go all the time, every year, I make new plans with new friends or old friends who bring new friends who had nowhere to go for their Christmas, as newbie expats do. This time of year, makes me feel warm and fuzzy for reasons like that.
Personally, I like to mix my Christmas experiences up. I’ve spent it with my family back home, on farms, with my bestie and her family at the beach, white Christmases with my friends here in Korea and one year, I even spent it all alone – it was magical! That night, this little sketch “Snow Much Fun” was created. For me, during the holiday season I’ve always been around people who made me laugh, kids running around, grownups playing board games, pool volleyball and had one or two drinks too many. It truly is a time of “Snow much fun” for me.
There are no rules as to how and with whom you spend your holidays and I love that. For a few years, a good mix of my expat friends decided to celebrate everyone’s holidays in one fun filled evening called “Merry Thanksgiving.” It involved Xmas quizzes, the Bad Santa gift game, giving thanks one at a time around the dinner table, drinking too much, eating too much and having all the fun in the world. That is also where this South African gal fell in love with stuffing – and my good friend Andrew still champions the stuffing game!
I know this time can also be hard for many people. I’ve had a few hard ones myself. For me, when I need a little help to get through a rough time, I always go for walks, and sit in the park to watch the kids play and see the young lovers falling madly in love. It’s a joy and love that is so intoxicating that it helps me feel hope again. May you find your way to the other side, because there is another side and it’s beautiful and waiting for you.
Tis a time for family and friends you choose as your family. It’s a time for big parties, small intimate gatherings. It’s a time to choose yourself and have new adventures. Of all the Christmas adventures I’ve had, the one I will never forget is the last one I got to spend with my dad, which brings me to blessings;
I’d like to take this moment to thank each and every one of you who has cheered me on, liked, loved and thumbs up my posts. The re-posts, the kind messages I receive on my blog posts and the kind reviews in my shop. Your love and support are the perfect Christmas blessing for me. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
See you soon in the new year with more art and stories to share.
Live, Love, Laugh, Let go and light up the world in your own perfect way.
Love, always
Ané

Thanks for sharing this Ane. Your art is so lovely and I always enjoy reading your words of wisdom. I hope you will have a super Christmas. It will be my first without seeing my daughter but I wills see my son. It will also be my first without going home to Riebeek but staying in Pretoria instead. As you say in your blog, each Christmas is different but special in its own way.
Thank you so much for your kind message. I truly hope this new flavor of Christmas still brings you all the holiday feels and joys. xxx
Wise words girl… One tends to forget that this time is hard for some people but there is so much to be thankful for! It’s about spending time with the people you love and respect, which should also be oneself.
We will not be with family but with our Swiss friends. It is so easy these days with video calls that everyone is together in any case 😃
LOVE reading your blogs and can’t wait for the next one!
May you have a Merry Thanksgiving filled with all your favourite things, especially love 💚
Thank you Yola!
I wish you a very happy Christmas with your Swiss friends. Sounds like an adventure to me 🙂
Thank you for your kind words.
