Stay Connected

Stay Connected

This little sketch was inspired by my no. 1 little guy, my one and only nephew James. And in honor of his birthday this month, I chose to share this sketch this month.

This boy of ours is magic, like my youngest sister likes to say. With hair that every woman would deal the devil for, he is a wild and gentle little soul all wrapped in the most beautiful little package. He laughs as easily as he cries. He feels deeply because his heart is open and connected to the world.

As I watch my little nephew from afar, in part thanks to his amazing mother, also known as my 2nd youngest sister, I get pictures, videos, weekend face times and other updates that keep me connected to this little magical human.

But I didn’t call this sketch “Stay Connected” for that reason. I named this sketch after his amazing ability to stay connected to himself through what brings him joy, in the form of play, entertainment, nourishment and his love of the outdoors and staying connected to earth and animals. Effortlessly.

Then there is also his connection to the people who love him and just the people around him. When James was born his parents decided to move out of the city, closer to my bro-in-law’s family. A more rural area where he plays outside and has a full range of family to tend to and influence him in beautiful and meaningful ways.

If you are strong enough to look past those big green eyes and gorgeous locks of hair, you’ll find a boy who loves to drive his little cars over his mom’s body, just to be near her while he’s having a good time.

Leave the door open and you are sure to find him biking, balling or exploring in the garden. Not even the dirt can ruin that cute little face. He doesn’t love being boxed in but hanging around you, doing his own thing, is his way of saying I love you and this is me connecting to you.

He likes to paint, play with his truck, snuggle his toy bear, watch a little TV and be wild and free outside. Once my sister sends a picture of him doing his own hair and make-up “like mom does.” And now, he is a big brother to his newborn sister Julia, whom he adores.

I see a little dude, connected to the people, the animals, creatures, crafts and joy in his life. And he is a constant reminder to me, that what is on the outside is a gift, what is on the inside is a duty we all have. To make the effort and do the work to stay connected to the world, inside and out, the people, the creatures and the pets that are our family too.

There is a saying about meditation if you don’t have 10 minutes you need an hour. I feel connection is the same. If you don’t have time to be outside, to pick up a paintbrush, cook a meal, or to just sit with your loved one, you definitely need to find an hour.

I hope my little dude inspired you as much as he does me, to stay connected to myself, nature, my loved ones and all the people and things that bring me joy.

Live, Love, Laugh, Let go and Light up the world in your own unique way.

Love always
